Ewana setting a pathway for ‘Girls into Golf’
England Golf has struggled to get girls into golf in recent years due mainly to the attraction of football and cricket which have both seen a big increase in the number of girl participants.
Bucking the trend at Didsbury Golf Club is Ewana Praveen, who tried her hand at golf earlier in the year and has made rapid progress.
Ewana outlined her pathway into golf and her future ambitions: “I am 13 years old and a student at Didsbury High School and my Auntie Margaret Lloyd, the Didsbury Golf Club Lady Captain, got me into golf.
“Didsbury professional Steffan has encouraged me and his lessons have helped my game enormously.
“My older brother Yohanan is ahead of me at the moment so I am determined to catch him up - he has also given me lots of help and advice
“I have thoroughly enjoyed playing on Thursdays with the ladies at Didsbury as they have been extremely welcoming and supportive.
“So far my biggest achievement is coming second in the Didsbury Junior Open where I posted 53 Stableford points and saw my handicap take a big drop to 36.1 from my first one of 50.8.
“Someone I look up to in golf is Nelly Korda as she is constantly aiming to improve her game and get better
“In the short term I would like to continue to reduce my handicap and in the long term get my name on one of the honours boards in the Didsbury club house.
“Among the people I would like to thank for my golf introduction and development Margaret is the main one and I would also like to thank all the ladies at Didsbury GC for being so welcoming and supportive and helping me enjoy the game of golf.
” What I have enjoyed in playing golf is being in the fresh air and being competitive.
“ I also enjoy meeting new people and I would recommend it to other girls because it’s a chance to get to know new people and challenge yourself to get better and try new things.”
